No sweet melody for karaoke
contestant
By Liza Mohd
Kuala Belait -
A Local Kuala Belait resident is demanding answers from a
production company who still has his .$50 registration fee for a
karaoke competition that has yet to take place since he registered
seven months ago.
The man in his 40's, who wished to
remain anonymous, stated that he and his niece had paid the $50
registration fee to enter a competition called "Bintang Karaoke 2004",
which was scheduled to take place sometime in September last year.
He said he found out about the
competition from flyers pasted in shops in KB town. He then paid the
$50 registration fee to enter in the competition in the group category
at a participating outlet in KB town where he filled up and submitted
the entry form.
The advert stated that the first
prize winner of the competition would receive $2,000, a trophy and
bonus for the group category, while in the solo category; the winner
would receive $1,000, a trophy and bonus. Registration fee for the
solo category was $30.
The advert also stated that the form
should be submitted before August 20, 2004, and that the number of
entries was unlimited.
After receiving no news for a month,
the man decided to call the production hotline number to find out the
actual date of the competition.
He was informed that the selection
process for the Belait district would be held in September last year
and that the competition is postponed without prior notice.
Later the company sent a text message
to the man's niece saying that only half of the registration fee could
be refunded at the outlet in Seria. However, the outlet in Seria said
it has not been authorised to make any refunds and cannot do so.
An owner of a participating outlet in
KB said a representative from the company had already collected the
cash and forms from the outlet.
He was told that more than 20 people
in Belait district entered the competition and some of them had paid
up $80 to enter both the solo and group category.
The man has tried calling the hotline
number to no avail. --
