Big Racket In Fake MC’s
By M K Anwar

Bandar Seri Begawan - Fake MC’s are the latest of scams. Fraudulent medical certificates (MCs) that prescribe several days rest as one wish have sent bosses scurrying to recheck previously submitted certificates by staff.

The Weekend learns that a leading company has recently questioned more than 50 workers medical certificates that are believed to be fakes.

These MCs are said to be bought by staff to grab an off day without the usual hassle. The accepted procedure is to apply for leave in advance.

The errant staffs have also found that providing a medical certificate generally provides instant leave without having to give any reason for being absent.

Buying fake MCs also saves the workers from having to go to the clinic or hospital and fake an illness as well as pay medical expenses.

It is believed that the fake MCs have been obtained fraudulently from a clinic or medical centre without the knowledge of the doctors responsible for issuing it.

Sources reveal that the discovery of the fake MC’s was the result of an unusual pattern of the serial numbers on these MCs given by its workers that has been brought to the attention of the company management.

MC’s usually bear the doctor's name stamped on it as well as the signature. Several companies somehow have not checked out the details usually taken for granted.

"Somebody out there have managed to get hold of a bundle of fake medical certificates and is selling them off one by one," said one informed source.

The cost of these fake MC’s is said to range from B$5 to B$10 a piece.

It is not known how many of these fake MC’s have circulated and received by companies and government departments in the country but this alleged racket is believed to have been around for some time now.

The length of leave `prescribed' on the fake MC’s depends on the person using it. Some have used fake MC’s recommending 2-3 days of leave.

There are also some bold enough to have more than a week of medical leave for non-existing illnesses. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
