New Lease Of Life For The Business Sector
By Ignatius Stephen

Bandar Seri Begawan - Several huge government tender awards here currently inching up to totalling a billion dollars may soon make the sultanate one happy place to do business again.

Contractors and others benefiting from this move towards massive public spending are naturally overjoyed but some are worried about the continued rise in prices of building materials.

Some notable multi million dollar infrastructure projects already given out and due to start soon include the huge dams in Tutong, the Parliament House, Radio Television Brunei relocation, major roads and re-settlement projects, construction industry sources said.

Brunei is currently in a deep business slump. That is because there has been no notable public spending in the past few years and as the foreign workers departed in droves at the end of projects, trade suffered.

But now with the possible influx of a large number of Thai and other foreign construction workers happy times could be soon here for the hard pressed local shop keepers and other businesses.

Other category of staff such as engineers, architects and professionals who could be heading for Brunei is likely to revive the local slump in real estate as demand for better housing rise.

It is also good news for the bus companies as workers would fill seats in the currently

dwindling public transport trade.

Restaurants and other places of entertainment would benefit as well. Business has been so bad that Brunei's oldest cinema, the Bolkiah Theatre in the capital has shut down although a new operator has plans to revive the establishment.

The news is good for everyone. The spin off is likely to benefit the long-suffering local business community including hotels, travel agents and airlines.

However uncertainty remains. That comes from the uncontrollable raw material prices as well as possible supply shortage as mainland China gobbles up everything at an unbelievable rate with the construction boom there set at a roaring pace.
