BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A water meter reader at the Department of Water Services was brought before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court for two counts of offences under the Section 165 of the Penal Code and Section 35 of the Water Supply Act.

Haji Ramlan bin Haji Metali pleaded guilty on the 4th of April for an offence under section 165 of the Penal Code. Investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau revealed that on the 1st of March 2007, Haji Ramlan accepted one thousand dollars for himself from the tenant at Kampung Bengkurong with the official functions as the Water Reader who is responsible to inspect and verify the water meter reading of the said house.

Haji Ramlan also pleaded guilty for the second charge for an offence under Section 35 of the Water Supply Act. The bureau's investigation has revealed that on the 1st of March 2007, at the same vicinity, the defendant had interfered with the water meter of the said house by changing the reader of the said water meter with a different water meter. The court has sentenced the defendant with 10 thousand 800 dollars fined for both charges or 11 months imprisonment in default.
